A company of the former peoples 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
