Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
