۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 Recall, when he said to his father and his people: "What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?" 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said: 'Is it the truth you have brought us, or are you one of those that play' 55 He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that. 56 I swear by God I will do something to your idols when you have turned your backs and gone." 57 He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry]. 58 They said: "Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said: "We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim (Abraham)." 60 They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness." 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He replied, "I think the biggest among them has broken the smaller ones. Ask them if they are able to speak". 63 So they returned one to another, and they said, 'Surely it is you who are the evildoers.' 64 Thereafter they were made to turn over upon their heads, saying, assuredly thou knowest that they speak not. 65 He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?” 66 Fie upon you and upon that which ye worship beside Allah! Will ye not then reflect? 67 They said: 'Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do anything' 68 We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham!' 69 And they desired a war on him, but We made them the greatest losers. 70 And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them leaders to guide (the people) by Our command; and We inspired them to perform good deeds and observe their moral obligations and pay the zakat; and they obeyed Us. 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge, and saved him from a people who acted villainously and were certainly wicked and disobedient. 74 Thus We admitted him to Our grace. He is surely one of the righteous. 75
