A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Proclaim, "Without doubt all - the former and the latter." 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 "We have fallen into debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
