The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And your clothing purify 4 And all defilement shun! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
