The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 Surely I fear for you the chastisement of a grievous day 135 They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, 136 This is but a fable of the men of old, 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
