The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
