The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And believes in Al-Husna. 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
