The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 It could be that those who disbelieve will wish that they were Muslims. 2 Leave them alone; let them eat and enjoy themselves the while the hope [of vain delights] beguiles them: for in time they will come to know [the truth]. 3 Not one habitation have We destroyed but at the time determined for it. 4 Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 They say: 'Thou, upon whom the Remembrance is sent down, thou art assuredly possessed! 6 Why do you not bring down angels upon us if you are indeed truthful?" 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). 9 And indeed We sent Noble Messengers before you, to the former nations. 10 and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him. 11 Even so We make a way for it (that is, the Admonition) in the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod); 12 They would not believe in it (the Quran), and already the example of (Allah's punishment of) the ancients (who disbelieved) has gone forth. 13 Though We opened to them a gate in heaven, and still they mounted through it, 14 They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery." 15
