The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
