The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
