Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn; 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
