Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.” 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah). 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
