Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
