A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Verily we are undone. 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
