Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
