A throng of the ancients 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
