The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
