He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
