The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
