The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
