Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
