The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
And by the sun and its brightness; 1 And [by] the moon when it follows it 2 And [by] the day when it displays it 3 by the night, when it envelops it! 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
