Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
