The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 and guard their private parts 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
