The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 and purify your robes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he beheld, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
