He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 And he fears, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
