The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Createth man from a clot. 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah). ۩ 19
