A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
