Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.” 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)]. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why were bracelets of gold not bestowed upon him? Why did a retinue of angels not accompany him as attendants?” 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
