The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
