A multitude of those of old 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
