Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
