We created mankind from clay, molded from mud, 26 And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire. 27 Your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to bring into being a man wrought from mud. 28 When I have formed him and breathed My spirit into him, fall down in prostration before him," 29 All the angels prostrated before Adam 30 But Iblis did not; he refused to be with the prostrates. 31 God asked him, "What is the matter with you, that you are not among those who have prostrated themselves?" 32 [Iblis] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!" 33 Allah said: then get thee forth therefrom; verily thou art one damned. 34 And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment. 35 He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." 36 "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord), 37 "Till the Day of the time appointed." 38 "O my Lord," he said, "since You have led me into error I'll beguile them with the pleasures of the world and lead them astray, 39 But not such of them as are Thy bondmen single-hearted. 40 He said: This is a right course incumbent upon Me: 41 Verily as for My bondmen, no authority shalt thou have over them, except the erring one who follow thee. 42 and for all such, behold, hell is the promised goal. 43 It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated." 44
