The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
