So they twain set out till, when they were in the ship, he made a hole therein. (Moses) said: Hast thou made a hole therein to drown the folk thereof? Thou verily hast done a dreadful thing. 71 He replied, "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to bear with me patiently?" 72 Moses said: 'Do not blame me for what I forgot, nor press me to do something which is too difficult' 73 So they departed; until, when they met a lad, he slew him. He said, 'What, hast thou slain a soul innocent, and that not to retaliate for a soul slain? Thou hast indeed done a horrible thing.' 74 ۞ (Khidr) said: "Did I not tell you that you can have no patience with me?" 75 Musa said: if I ask thee regarding aught after this, company not with me; surely there hath reached to thee from my side an excuse. 76 So they departed; until, when they reached the people of a city, they asked the people for food, but they refused to receive them hospitably. There they found a wall about to tumble down, and so he set it up. He said, 'If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken a wage for that.' 77 He said: This shall be separation between me and you; now I will inform you of the significance of that with which you could not have patience. 78 As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the sea. I rendered it imperfect because behind them there was a king who was taking every ship by brutal force. 79 As for the youth, his parents were believers and we feared that he would trouble them by rebellion and denial of truth. 80 We wanted their Lord to replace him with someone purer than him and more compassionate. 81 "And as for that wall, it belonged to two orphan boys [living] in the town, and beneath it was [buried] a treasure belonging to them [by right]. Now their father had been a righteous man, and so thy Sustainer willed it that when they come of age they should bring forth their treasure by thy Sustainer's grace. "And I did not do [any of] this of my own accord: this is the real meaning of all [those events] that thou wert unable to bear with patience." 82
