The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
