The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
