a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Proclaim, "Without doubt all - the former and the latter." 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore, O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him, proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
