Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
