Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 and the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
