We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 The Pharaoh shouted to his people, "My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine? and can you not see that the streams flow from beneath my palace? 51 Aye! I am better than this one who is despicable, and well-nigh cannot make himself plain. 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
