The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and defilement flee! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he thought; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
