In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited. 4 Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 But [whether by night or by day,] remember thy Sustainer's name, and devote thyself unto Him with utter devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Firon disobeyed the apostle, so We laid on him a violent hold. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
