By the moon, 32 By the receding night 33 And the dawn when it shineth forth, 34 Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) 35 A warning to mankind, 36 For the one among you who wishes to come forward or stay back. 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 In Gardens; they shall be asking, 40 about the guilty ones: 41 “What drove you to Hell?” 42 and they shall reply, "We were not among those who prayed; 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 45 and the Day of Judgment we were wont to call a lie 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 And so, of no benefit to them could be the intercession of any that would intercede for them. 48 What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition 49 As if they were asses taking fright 50 That had fled from a lion? 51 Aye! every one of them desireth that: he should be vouchsafed scrolls expanded. 52 Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter. 53 No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder. 54 Let him then who heeds remember it. 55 But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. 56
