The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And the day resplendent 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
