۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 when he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues unto which you are cleaving?' 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 Said he: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!" 54 They said, "Have you brought us the Truth, or are you one of those who jest?" 55 He said: "Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth which He created and to that I bear witness before you. 56 By Allah, I will certainly outwit your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone' 57 So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 'We have heard a young man called Abraham mention them' they replied. 60 They said, "Then bring him here in the sight of all the people, so that they may act as witnesses." 61 They said, 'So, art thou the man who did this unto our gods, Abraham?' 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 Thereupon they realized their own foolishness and said, "We ourselves are wrong-doers". 64 Then they were utterly put to confusion saying, 'Very well indeed thou knowest these do not speak.' 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" 67 They said: burn him, and succour your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 We (Allah) said: "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!" 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, making each of them righteous. 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
