The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 And yet, but yet man is rebellious, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
