Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the break of Day 1 And the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
