[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
